Truly, no film has reached me on such an emotional level as this masterpiece of filmmaking. There is a German term: "Gesamtkunstwerk", which translates to "total work of art". I can think of no better way to describe the groundbreaking, hilarious, astonishing, heartbreaking, and thrilling ride this film continues to be upon my 70th viewing of it. The subtle new-wave influences threaded throughout such brilliant writing and balletic cinematography come through as shining beacons of what film aspires to be: pure, perfect art.
